I just received my packet today from Eddie and I noticed that the show is no longer The Boot & Saddlemaker Round-up. It is now the Boot-saddle & Upholstery Trade show. Comments anyone?

When Sam Harris and Jack Reed organized this show in the beginning, I know for a fact they wanted it limited to the bootmaker and saddlemaker industry. One of their goals was to try to keep the one-man bootshops and saddleshops from becoming a thing of the past. Seeing how this show has grown and is so demanding for space now, I feel the addition of the upholstery trade is going to cause the show to outgrow itself because now it is apparently open to anything in the leather products industry. Where will it stop?
I have nothing against the upholstery trade or any other leather trade, but I wish the bootmakers and saddlemakers could keep their own identity. I'm not aware if somebody has organized a trade show for upholstery or other leather goods in general, but I think that would be the appropriate course of action.
Bootmaking and saddlemaking are a unique genre. Upholstery, clothing, baseball gloves and so many other leather trades are unique also, but they deserve their own attention and space.

I haven't received my packet yet, but I would be disappointed if this is the direction the event goes. I hope it doesn't continue.

It needs to stay western. We are losing to much of our Western Heritage as it is. I just don't see the connection with boots/saddles and upholstery.

Not being given to posting on these websites as I am not a computer savy soul. I have to say it is a very dark and somber day as we continue to lose our perspective of what this trade is suppose to be. Alas once again the pursuit of the almighty dollar has triumphed over the integrity and honored traditions that so many boot shoe and saddlemakers try to perpetuate each and every day in their respective shops. There are many in our trade that are like myself that do not post because this contraption is so hard for old dogs to master but I know they to are saddened by this new deviant direction the convention is heading. I have always been encouraged and inspired by both the masters as well as the novices of this time honored trade. Something very special and magical about the convention will be lost in this dilution of who we are. Truly the little people weep. The ability to ENDEAVOR TO PERSEVERE just became a little more burdensome.

I still have plans to go. I hope everyone else will go if they can this year. I will base my going again on what I see this year and what I hear will go on next year. Perhaps this will be a one time event with the upholstery. I also think bootmakers, saddlemakers, etc., should express their displeasure (if they are) of this change.

All,

I fully intend to attend the 04 Roundup in WF. I am however, concerned with the current trend of the direction it is going. If I had a vote the Upholstery trade would not be included. What will be next? Tennis Shoe mfgrs?..I don't have any vote on it so I will just have to not like it and go on..The WF Show *IS* a good thing for every Boot,Shoe, or Saddlemaker that attends and everyone that attends is a friend of ours. Eddie and Kathy are two of the nicest people I know in the Trade and they have helped me out a lot of times. However this does not stop my concerns for the preservation of our anchient craft and you can rest assured that I am going to remain concerned and do everything I can to preserve the Boot and Shoemaking craft in every way I can......TR

Gary,
How is the fox job coming along? Pics! Foxing is good experience but sometimes a lesson learned.. In the time you spend doing them you can almost make a new pair. The only time I do one is when a boot cracks prematurely. I have a pair in the shop now for the first re-sole and they are cracked all the way through on both boots in several places..It is some shrunken shoulder leather(Bullhide) But they have been in several cutting pens.....TR

Hey all, got my packet last week and saw the change. Even if they are including the upholstery industery in the WF show, that is where I go to see my friends in the boot and saddle industery. Living way out west (Marfa) I don't to see anyone except at the show. So, I will continue to go and see who will be there. Also, it is the show that I go to each year to stock up my leather, wool, and new tools for the next year for my shop. I can't make the far away shows and this is still OUR show, so I will go and look forward to seeing and talking to anyone of you that attend. Besides I think the B B Q is always good and with Tex and I planning to seranade you all this year, make it a point to come. You don't have to associate with those other folks, just be friendly as we in our craft always are.

Jim

I just read your post. I know where you are coming from. I can't waite until the day I can make it to the round up and meet all the people that I feel have expanded my mind to all that is needed to be good at this branch. On the other hand I've seen other situations that are like it. it hurts to see someone/a branch work it's way into something that it was not meant for. In the end though, the chance to meet up with mentors and friends would always win out.

I have an idea for something I'd love to see at the Roundup. I'll toss it out and see what ya'll think.

I wish we could have a few short demonstrations. I'm thinking of small components of bootmaking (or saddlemaking for that matter) that wouldn't require much in the way of machinery. We could have Knife Sharpening, Making a Waxed End, Lip Knife Sharpening (I'd go to that one!), Skiving...just basic skills that new bootmakers would love to see demonstrated and even experienced bootmakers might learn something new. Sort of like this forum but in person.

I'm not sure Eddie and Kathy would go for it officially but perhaps if it were unofficial? What do you think?

Lisa,

I think it is a great idea.

I think if someone will discuss it with Eddie and Kathy soon, perhaps some space/table can be reserved and some announcements on the PA system or just handouts can be made.

Even a non-bootmaker like me would be interested in watching.

Janne
Friday my family of 4 went to Fort Worth it is under a 2 hour drive from Wichita Falls. We went to Will Rogers where horse shows and rodeos go on alot.
We then went to the Famous stock yards to M.L. Leddys boot's, and many "TEXAS" stuff shops. At 4 O'Clock we watched the cattle drive of about 10-12 HUGE Longhorn steers. Risky's Steak house and Famous Cattlemans steak house are there as well.
If you have the time BillyBobs is a block away and has a rodeo going inside.
Janne, the point to all this is if you Fly into DFW airport that might be a neat side trip to take in.

I may be a little late inposting this, but I would like to know what you thought of Tex and my playing at the banquet this year? Tex, maybe I should have asked you first before posting this but I haven't heard any thing from anyone good or bad. I had fun and thought we did a pretty good job with never having played together before. For those that stayed and listened, Thanks and for those that did not I think you missed some fun.

Jim and Tex,

Personally I thought it was good and hope you two or someone else does something similar next year.

One thing I think could be changed for next year, in my opinion, is to set the entertainment up in the front, same area as the podium. I think that by having the entertainment on the far side of the banquet it caused people who wanted to talk or didn’t want to listen to the entertainment, to move to the opposite side. I thought the talking was a distraction (not against people talking) to those who wanted to listen to the entertainment.

Perhaps if entertainment is done in the front, more people would listen and those who want to talk will go to the lobby area.
