On one of my trips home in the late 80’s, I stopped off to visit a friend who worked for Wichita Publishing Inc. They published a magazine called KS Magazine which came out about once a month. In 1986, they published a series on Cowboy Boots and Kansas Bootmaker’s, which was written by Jim Hoy. My friend was kind enough to give me copies of the magazines that contained the articles and Lee and I have treasured them all these years. KS. Magazine is no longer available, but I was able to contact Jim Hoy, and he gave me permission to post the articles that appeared in those magazines on the forum. Some of you may be familiar with Mr. Hoy writings if you have a copy of Cowboy Boots: The Kansas Story put out by the Kansas State Historical Society in 1994. Here is the publishing information for his articles in the great, little book - *Kansas and Cowboy Boots: Folklore, Fact, and Fancy,* in Jennie Chinn, ed., Cowboy Boots: The Kansas Story, Topeka: Kansas State Historical Society, 1994, pp. 23-30. *Custom-Made Boots: A Traditional Process Continues,* in Jennie Chinn, ed., Cowboy Boots: The Kansas Story, Topeka: Kansas State Historical Society, 1994, pp. 31-36. Mr. Hoy’s present position is the Director of the Center for Great Plains Studies at Emporia State University. For more information on Jim Hoy, I’ve included this link - http://www.emporia.edu/english/hoy/hoybio.htm There are five articles and I am going to post one every few days. I hope you enjoy these as much as Lee and I did. |

Carrlyn, I enjoyed the article, thanks. I have the book too. If you ever talk to Jim, ask him if he has ever found a picture of Gus Blucher. There are old pictures of Hyer, Justin, etc. There should have been one of Gus. Tell Jim I have enjoyed his writing too. Mark |

Jim is located in Alma, Kansas. He went to school with Lee and was also a saddlemaker. He was a very good bootmaker. Carl McDowell was a real gentleman. |

I cannot get over how GREAT the art is...just amazing. Mark indicated that it might also be in book form. Is that correct, and if so is there any information available about the book? Thanks so much, D |

I've talked to one of Fred Hammon's daughter a few months ago. I hope I can find her email and show this to her. She wanted to do a DVD about Kansas bootmakers. |
