Fort Worth Star Telegram Fire damages Stockyards building By TRACI SHURLEY Star-Telegram Staff Writer A three-alarm blaze early Sunday at the historic M.L. Leddy building in the Fort Worth Stockyards caused more than $500,000 in damages and took more than 50 firefighters nearly an hour to control, fire officials said. Passers-by reported the fire at M.L. Leddy’s Boots and Saddlery about 2:50 a.m. Sunday, said Lt. Kent Worley, a spokesman for the Fort Worth Fire Department. Worley said it appeared the fire, which started on the building’s second floor, had been burning inside for some time when firefighters arrived. “From the outside of the building it doesn’t look like a lot of damage,” Worley said. “But, there’s quite a bit inside.” No one was injured. The cause of the fire was still under investigation Sunday, but Worley said it did not appear to be suspicious. Fire investigators said there appeared to be about $200,000 worth of damage to the building and at least $500,000 in fire, smoke and water damage to the building’s contents. “It’s boots and saddles. It’s jeans and shirts, hats, everything,” Worley said of the damaged contents. M.L. Leddy’s has done customer leather work from the location in the Stockyards since 1941 and has counted famous names such as Elvis Presley and Lyndon Johnson among its customers, according to Star-Telegram archives. A daytime fire at M.L. Leddy’s in December 2002 caused about $180,000 worth of damage to the then-92-year-old building, a Star-Telegram story said.
