Hello to all, i feel like i know a whole lot of you.
i have browsed this site as a bible for over a year.
My name Is Raul Ojeda, in feb 2007, i took over a shoe shop in Los Angeles. its Willie's Shoe Service. we've been open since 1956, this shop used to do only shoes to measure, but over the years transformed to a shoe repair shop, the lack of demand and fewer workers made Willie cut down in production, he is now 92 and comes in to work every day, although reading the news paper and greeting pretty girls isn't much work.
last yeas in may i made my first pair of shoes, i called them "blue demon" its a midnight navy blue patented leather oxford.
i look forward to get to know you all, and hopefully on the next round up i get to shake a lot of hands of ya'll talented craftsmen and improve my skill.

i am at your orders,

Hi everyone,
My name is Jeff Richard, I am a disabled veteran, a former member of the U.S. Navy's Silent Service (nuclear mechanic, submarines). In my civilian reincarnation, I picked up leather craft about 2.5 years ago. There are numerous examples of my work here. I have been catering primarily to the U.K. pagan community making book covers and 'costume' pieces. I recently enrolled in Green Country Tech. Ctr.'s boot and saddle making program where I will be focusing on making a mess of good leather while trying to construct a solid boot and driving my classmates batty by experimenting with art and style. You may Colin for introducing me to the forum.

Look forward to chatting with you all and watching the learning curve steepen further.

I am Emery Downen, from Coalgate, OK and Early, TX, I have been looking at this website from time to time and decided to jump in and join the fun. I am enrolled at Green Country Tech in Okmulgee, OK, since starting on April 6, 2009 I have completed three pair of boots and just finished my first pair of shoes, as well as my first saddle. I started the course with the idea that I would concentrate on building saddles, but soon became infected with the boot and shoe making syndrome. I started doing small leather projects in my youth and soon began supplementing my income through high school and college. I always dreamed of building boots and saddles, but thought that I would have to wait until I was an old retired fellow. I would like to thank each of you for sharing your information, experience, and knowledge related to boot and shoe making. I am very inspired after looking at the pictures posted. Look forward to sharing and learning.

Hello, My name is Dan Hickman. I went to school with Lee Miller and really admire the work that he does. Lee and his wife Carrlyn are great people. I have met a few of you at the RoundUp a few years ago. After an absence from boot making I'm hoping to get back into it soon. I have built a new building to put my shop in. In the past I have made boots for myself and family. I happened upon this site a couple of weeks ago. There are some very talented people on here. Don't know that I can answer many questions, but I'm sure I'll have a few to ask. Let me thank you in advance for your patience.

I don't know what to tell you! I am gathering tools: I live in Houston, I spoke to one of the speakers in wichita falls from Wheeler boots, he told me to give him a ring I haven't done that yet. I saw Janne's presentation and actually it is his kind of thing that I want to do- that sort of hand doing everything that made me go to the roundup- that is why I went to wichita falls: Have you seen the things they are doing to boots? Incredible. I brought my father; he is an artist but he won't tell you that... Anyway he was struck by the talent at the roundup- he was really impressed. I bought an awl from Dick anderson there. I now have two pair of lasts from Georgene- they arrived in the mail two days ago. I met Qiana; actually my dad did. I showed him Lisa Sorrells website and his jaw dropped. I'm left handed. I don't know who the findings suppliers in Texas are: I contacted MacPherson leather in Washington and I was told that Goetz no longer exports to the US because the customs regulations have...erected formidable nontariff barriers: so they no longer are able to stock goetz. I want a heel iron- I didn't see one at the roundup. My favorite quote at the moment is by Goethe. Just google 'Goethe quotes' and start reading: if you guess my favorite you win a prize. I really like jodhpur boots; with the elastic on the side; I'm probably the only one: I also love polo boots. I wish I had a pattern to make them. I have so many questions; I hope there is no rule against pestering people incessantly! I look for books on bootmaking-they aren't easy to find- I am so lucky to have the forum! Travelling to sweden for tutoring is impossible within the forseeable future. I would love to go to germany and denmark: I went to france; but not for a shoemakerschool; I feel really guilty about missing that opportunity. I want to go to Williamsburg to study the methods in the old cobbler's shop; (I think the cobbler there translated a shoemaking book in french from the 18th century; which is probably not easy. It would be fun to have a conversation in 18th century french- can you imagine!) There is something aesthetically pleasant that modern factories can't touch. Modern machines are so alien and modern management is so inorganic. I met another Colin at the roundup! Unbelievable. Anyhow; This is a great Idea! I'm so stoked!

Hello, it is wonderful to have such a treasure trove of ideas, professionalism and knowlege all on one site. What a treat!

Let me introduce myself.

I am an author, designer, writer and last maker.

My previous work as a fashion designer gave me great understanding that to make an article of clothing truly custom; a form must be made beginning with a duplicate of the wearer.

I developed a lastmakeing school called: Lastmakingschool.com. I am located north of seattle area in snohomish county. It is my aim to continue and expose traditional lastmaking knowlege not readily available in today's market to those interested in having control over thier footwear designs..

In the late 19th century, many manufactures experimented with casting a foot and making a last from it with no avail.

In the 1980's experiments picked up regarding revisiting the foot as a last shape. An art student, found a way to make orthopedic shoes by casting a foot and making a last from a foot model. These lasts were made of foam. The shoes turned out to look like feet with the toe bumps and all, had no artistic design. They replicated the look of a moon shoe. The lasts made from these feet, did not have a heel option, nor did they include modern sole shapes. These shoes were not designed for beauty, they were designed for function. however, they brought relief to many who aquired them. None the less, this art student developed his technique so well, that as computer technology was being integrated into last making manufacturing, he was recruited to assist in many of the computerized last making software we know today. However, the funny thing happened during this development, although the computerized systems found a way to scan a foot, they only used it as a fitting tool for a three "d" scanned last library available in the software., thus the foot being scanned was not actually the starting point for making a last custom for that individual. Once a last shape is found that slightly resembles that foot pair, they make small adjustments as a boot or shoe maker would, and the last is carved in wood on a table top lathe that is computer numerically controlled. Tthe foot pair is forgotten

My school has continued the work of creating a last directly from an identical model of the foot. We have found the missing key regarding shaping a last from an identical replica of an individual foot pair into a beutifully shaped last and thus footwear that look great and walk wonderfully.

We have optimized feet moulds and models as a beginning point to last making as we believe all modern scanned software should, and have combined scientific research done through out the 20th century regarding proper last making theory.

Our science basted method of last making combined with proper lastmaking theory allows boots and shoes to be created in any heel height and toe design for beautiful walk able footwear that is truely custom.

The boots and shoes made on this method of last making retain the planter surface of the individual allowing a more comfortable fit and fuction. By teaching this method to boot and shoe designers they get a competitive edge in the comfort results to their customers but still allowing artistic licence to thier designs.

In our schools classes you will learn traditional last making theory. and then how it applies to making a last beginning with a foot model. And then transforming this foot model into a last that is guaranteed to replicate foot volume, breadth, planter surface replication and correction if necessary, styling, and design. By knowing these you get a better control over your designs based on what is the best look and fit, support and function for that individual foot pair.

It currently remains a hand last making method and is a plastic last.

I'm 36 years old -- supposedly too young for a midlife crisis -- but just the same I have decided to change careers and learn to make boots. Hello,
I am Mark from Riverside County California. I am new to boot making, have completed one pair and am starting my second pair (I posted a few pictures in the beginners question tread). I was taught in a rather informal small class at DKJ leather in San Bernardino. I have worn and loved cowboy boots since grade school. I have had numerous store bought (Yuk!) and a few vintage pair but never had the pleasure of owning the master pieces you all make here.
Professionally, I own and operate a small security system company but have many interests involving working with my hands and crafting things. I enjoy tools and machinery, wood working and turning, marquerty and inlays, antique restoration, automotive restoration, embroidery, metal fabrication and within the last few years, leather work and sewing.
The artistry and talent that I see here is, well… indescribable. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience, it is much appreciated. If I can ever help with any technical or computer stuff, I would be happy too.
Regards,
Mark

Qiana, WOW! – I am very envious; Lisa Sorrell sure is talented and obviously loves her trade. I would like to look into more instruction when time away from the business would permit it. Until then I will fiddle around in the garage (my favorite place to be) and keep practicing on my own… Recently I purchased an older Adler cylinder bed machine, but I am going to try and trade it for a patching machine if possible.
Best of luck in your vocation!...mfw

Hello All,
My name is Ryan Selman. I live and work in Tomball, Texas. I am a former student of Tex, and have been making boots off and on for six years. More off than on but will turn it into a full time profession in September when I finally open my own shop. I have done boot and shoe repair with my grandfather since I was big enough to get in his way.
I look forward to chatting with and learning from all of you.

Haya ! My name is Marika and I'm making shoes in Brooklyn,NY. I've started about five years ago with cemented construction and have been studying to make made to measure footwear with hand sewn soles in London two years ago and with Janne Melkersson in the beautiful Sweden in March 2009.He kindly posted a picture of the two tone spectators we made together on this forum. I have been taking orders since a little while now and I am very encouraged to work in my little studio reading the postings on this forum. I've met some of you boot makers last fall in Wichita Falls and loved the get-to-gethers. It's all really inspiring and I just wanted to say thank you!

Hi, I'm Chuck from Tulsa Oklahoma. I work in a shoe and boot repair shop and have a keen interest in boot making. We have a veteran cobbler (45 years) experience which does the work. I help in tear down and working the front counter and some other repairs. I have been looking at several posts here and in awe at the communication, camaraderie, and of course the BOOTS!

I really want to learn more before taking a class on boot making - but boot making is my goal.

Hi Colin. Thanks for the welcome from you and Dan. You're right, this forum seems like a wealth of knowledge. I really like reading about and looking at the "how to's" and the pics of finished boots.

Boy, It' so nice to find such a forum as this with so much information. Really glad to be a part of it.
But let me introduce my self.
I started trying to make stuff from leather way back since when. And as time passed I began to improve somewhat, though I'm still working on that one. I've always been interested in cowboy boots. Got my first pair of Acme boots when I was still looking forward to growing up some day.
Today I have my own shop behind our house. Do mostly boot, shoe and tack repairs. Also every now and then will get an order for some custom tack or leather outdoor gear such as gun holsters, cartridge belts, sheaths for custom made knives, ect. But my favorite job is making custom boots, both lace-ups or pull-ons. I would just as soon do nothing but make boots, but circumstances dictate that I take jobs as they come in.
Got my first break into making boots when
D.W. Frommer down in Redmond, Oregon invited me to furnish the materials and he would take me through making a pair of boots. In 1987 I was finally able to take him up on his offer and I spent 3 weeks in his shop making a pair of cowboy boots for my wife with inlaid mule ears, fancy stitched tops, toe bugs, the whole nine yards. When I got back home I made a pair for myself and then started making some for customers. Since then it's been a constant learning process trying to improve, studying all the scarce boot making literature I could get my hands on and applying it to my own bootmaking. I'm interested in gleaning what information I can from other boot makers, and if they might be interested, sharing what little I know about the trade.

Hello,
I guess to follow protocol I should say something here and introduce myself.
My name is JD, friends call me Montana. I am not a professional bootmaker, only a hobbyist I would say. I am a firefighter for the US Navy.
While I was living in Montana working as a wildland firefighter I made the friendship of a fella, Dan Schwarz and his family, that made boots. After bothering him about making me a pair of custom boots for some time and developing a good friendship, he offered to teach me to make my own pair of boots and I took him up on the offer. That was in the summer of 2007. In the mean time I have been messing around with leather here and there. Now that I have a little more free time I have started buying equipment and tools to start making boots for myself (and I have been volunteered by friends to make some for friends)...its really amazes me, how when friends learn you can do something (no matter how well or not so well lol) they are so eager to "help you learn by having you make THEM a pair" hahah...I have PLENTY of practice ahead of me lol...
I will post a pic of my first pair of boots when I get home from my shift tomorrow...In all fairness to Dan and Keni...I had A LOT of "help" lol...
Not really sure what else i should post here...lol
forgive me if i negated to include information I should have

I am not a boot maker but a repairman. I have been repairing boots for over 30 years. I got started playing around with it when my new wife showed up with a bunch of boots she had while she was rodeo queen. Since I had began to misstrust the local repairman I began to do it my self. I was tired of the welt being ground off and becoming so perferated that it wouldn't hold a sole. I began to learn as I went.

I have always appreciated boots. While I was in college made 5 trips to El Paso and bought Tony Lama(when they were good boots) seconds and broken lots for customer back home. Something to do on spring break.

All my soles are hand stitched because I got tired of perferated welts. All my soles are 3/4 or full. Another thing I have found is that soles that are sewn on sometimes end up cutting the lacing that secures the welt to the vamp and insole. Paul Bonds are notories for that. I have sold Wilsons in the past and found that to happen on some occations.

I admire the talent of the boot makers on the forum. Very talented to say the least. I lean more to making a usable well made boot for the working cowboy. Something similar to No Names.

I have been toying with taking Schartz class but now have the opportunity to be tutored individually by a boot maker that wants to retire. Hoping that pans out.

My first question is where do you get good thick 12-13 iron full soles?

Hello all,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Bryan Nelson, I live in San Antonio, Texas.

I have been doing leatherwork now for about a year. working on carving, and tooling. I have been practicing my hand stitching also. I really enjoy the challenges. It has been a difficult learning curve, but I am getting better. No bootmaking experience.

I think I would like to venture into bootmaking, but don't think I fully understand it enough to jump in. I hope to learn more from you folks.
I would love to visit a workshop and talk to someone, and maybe get a better understanding.

I have lived in Texas all of my life, and really appreciate the workmanship of a good boot, although, I have not owned a really good pair yet.

I really enjoy working with leather. I think I would like to make boots. It seems a lot like tooling leather. It seems like it really takes a strong commitment.

I hope I don't seem too overly enthusiatsic, and ask too many newbie questions.
I have been reading the posts, and trying to learn as much as I can.

My economic situation is one that will not allow me to take a class right now. I have been hit hard by the current economy. I have been laid off
twice in the last year. I hope one day to take a class. In the meantime, I appreciate your patience, and hope to learn from y'all.
I know that if the desire and passion is strong enough, I will find a way to make it work.

Thanks Mark and Tex too.

I have not made a pair of boots in two years, I lost most of my tools and any shop space when I had I had to down size my life. I would have built back up and wanted to with earnest but my family does not approve of me making boots for a living, so that said I still want to feel connected with the other boot makers and keep up and feel part of things. California’s SF bay area has lost 90% of its western wear market. Very few people show any interest in custom boots here, so I should start thinking of relocating when affordable. I miss the smell of the leather, the creation of raw materials and the creativity and craft that go into a fine looking and well stylish boot. Each step bringing me closer to something of accomplishment built by my own two hands, I tell you, not many people can say that about their jobs these days.

I live in Central Montana, in a town of about 100 (the population swells to about 115 in the Summer) We're about 110 miles North of Billings Montana. I wear off-the-thriftstore-shelf boots, which have recently been wearing out faster than I can replace them, so I'm going to repair them myself.

I have been sewing clothing with and without machines since early childhood, my step-parents required it of us, ("In case you marry a girl that doesn't know how to sew!"). In the Army (many moons ago) I used industrial sewing machines to make and repair Parachutes - both for individuals and for air delivery of vehicles and supplies - in the 82nd Airborne. I earned extra money in the army, by tailoring (pegging) fatigue pants so they weren't so sloppy. I almost got an Article 15 over that, which put an end to my tailoring enterprise! I've had to sew shoe and boot-soles by hand and nail on heels which were coming apart, so I figure it's time to learn to do it right! I'm here to learn, so that I can repair my own boots properly and eventually maybe make shoes and boots for the family. Since we get a lot of sub-zero weather for our 7 to 9 months Winters here, I'll probably be making mukluks, and mocs too. Right now, I either get my supplies from Montana Leather in Billings, or on the Internet. I hope to start repairing my boots and making the footwear within the next couple of months.

Being 110 miles from nowhere, there's no chance to get any advice other than what I read on the forums, so I appreciate all the good advice and all the knowledge that is being imparted to the world here.

I love this forum, it's a fountain of knowledge!

Well here we go. My name is Bob Murray and I live in Amarillo, Texas. I am a Banker by profession and a leather craftsman/aspiring bootmaker by desire. I first started doing leather work in the 70s and after about 10 years put my tools away. After moving to Amarillo in 2008 and looking for a hobby to keep me busy, I decided to get back to leatherwork. Last year I had the opportunity to study leather carving with Jesse Smith in Colorado and bootmaking with Bill Phillips in Carlsbad, NM. I spend time in my shop virtually every evening and on the weekends. I am currently working on my 4th pair of boots and learn something new everyday. I have been reading the posts on this sight for months and have learned quite a bit from you guys. I thought I should "officially" join and announce myself. I had the distinct pleasure of spending a few hours with Lee & Carrlyn a couple of weeks ago. Their hospitality and willingness to share information is one of the driving factors to join the forum and make reservations for Salado. I am anxious to be "on board" with you all.

Hi Lisa, yes fly tying is a very big passion of mine, I tie mostly classic salmon flies, classic bass flies, and stacked deer hair bugs. I really like keeping the old traditions alive, the methods used to make the classic salmon and bass flies have roots in the 1800s. I don't fish as much as I would like, but it is tons of fun when I get to do it.

What fly shop does your husband own? What is his name?, I may recognize it, I am quite involved on some fly fishing/tying forums.

Mark, I'm in western Michigan, Hamilton to be exact, a long ways from Texas and Oklahoma I know. :-)

Dustin,
Sorry it took me so long to respond. I sometimes forget that the forum occasionally skips automatically sending me all the forum posts.

Hi, my name is Ty May. I'm from Hondo, TX and recently spent two weeks with Tex Robin and his grandson, learning how to make boots! Tex and Justin did a wonderful job, thanks guys! I've been around the leather trade my entire life, my dad is a custom saddle maker in Northern Colorado, but never learned from him while growing up. About 5 years ago I decided to give it a try and have found leather work to be very rewarding! I took an interest into making boots and finally took the course with Tex this spring. I'm currently working on a pair of boots for the Mrs. and the daughter.

Ty, welcome. I too have been doing leather work for years but have only been making boots for about 8 months. I am finishing up pair #4. Pair #3 was for my daughter who was just excited to have them, regardless of how perfect they fit. Pair #4 is for my wife and as Mark Candela and I were discussing, a wife will definately tell you how they fit! Good luck.

Hello to all youz out there in bootland. After months of sneaking peeks at the forum, I decided to formally join in. Big Thanks to Mark for making it easy and friendly - and I hope I achieve some acceptable grammar and spelling errors for you, buddy.

For the past year or so I have been hellbent on learning to make cowboy boots, and possibly other leather goods. With my two college degrees, in engineering and art, I have a reasonable capability with making, building and designing stuff. But being in the Big Apple on the East Coast makes it a little more difficult to find Western style makers. So, I took a shoebuilding class at a university here, found a private class with a shoe studio in Brooklyn, and read and practiced everything I could to learn so far. Last week I finally ordered a great post-bed Cobra sewing machine and found a bit of space to work.

I am extremely excited about this, as I have looked for a passion my whole life - I am in my forties now and feel like for the first time I've finally found it. I've also been lucky to have had contact with great bootmakers and fantastic human beings such as Luis and his father from Luis Jovel Custom in Fresno, B.H. Hill in El Paso, Mickey and Marie from Ghostrider in Denver, a jewel of a person from Mercedes in Ft. Worth... Debby, and this week a great time at lunch with Jim Babchak and David Uland who are local to NYC.

I look forward to interracting with you all, exchange info, get motivated and possibly find hands-on practice in other studios and shops - although with a baby in the oven I may have some trouble affording to do that for a bit.

Thanks to you all for the inspiration thus far.

Good day all.

I wanted to introduce myself, given I have been reading your forum for quite some time and have finally decided to take the plunge into boot/shoe making.

My name is Shane, and I grew up in a pair of boots on the back of a horse in Southwest Colorado. I've worn out and worn through more pairs than I care to remember but only two custom pair. As it goes now, I'm a physician in the Midwest and far away from the mountains and horses I love. However, it doesn't mean I can't maintain my fashion roots. While my hats always tend to engender stares... its my boots that typically bring about the most comment.

I've found that given I'm standing on my feet all day in cowboy boots, I thought I might as well finally have some that actually fit. I began looking into getting a pair of custom boots, and the more I looked at buying a pair, the more I began learning about what made a good bespoke boot. As I learned more in order to make a good choice, I began learning more about what I liked... But moreso, I began realizing just how much I wanted to make something. I enjoy my career, however I've realized I have a need to MAKE things. I have painted and enjoy woodworking but have not found the hand work which has really caught my heart. As I watched your videos and read your books, blogs, and posts I began finding something which brought me more and more enjoyment in and of itself. The more I looked for someone to make my boots, the more boots I found I wanted. The more I looked at your wares, the more trouble I had trying to decide just what I wanted. I wanted the triad but I wanted the ostrich and the croc and the smooth calf. I wanted the inlay, the stitching, and especially the tooled leather overlay. I recognized that a new world had opened up to me and perhaps... Just perhaps... This will be my hand work fix as well as a worthy output for my skills. I have only so much room on my walls for paintings and only so much space on my floor for furniture... But I have two feet that can be shod differently every single day... And I look forward to doing so.

I have so many questions but am trying to research them before I ask something you all have answered previously. I will post them separately, hopefully in the appropriate location.

Thank you all for this board. It has helped me immensely.

Now that you mention it, that is one of my most pressing questions... or at least relating to it. I am planning on attending the Roundup this fall.

Is it best, if your flying, to fly into Wichita Falls... or closeby and drive in?

Edie and Shane,

Welcome to the Forum!

From what I have heard about flying to the Round Up, it is best to fly to DFW or OK City and rent a car to drive. Wichita Falls is limited in the amount of flights.

Hello
My name is Kevin Scribner and I am new to the forum and bootmaking. As a kid I loved cowboy boots but was not allowed to have them because I have bad feet. Not sure who decided they would be bad for me. Mom I guess. Growing up in New Hampshire cowboy boots are more scarce than a 100 degree day-maybe one a summer. To make along story short, I have worked with feet for 25 years as an orthotist and have recently decided that i want to make boots and shoes. The shoe and bootmaking companies commonly used by orthotic and prosthetic facilities make poor quality shoes for the most part. I am really excited about being a part of a group of folks who make such beautiful boots and shoes with such high quality.
Although I grew up in the NE I now live in Jackson Mississippi. Yes, a huge culture change, but more cowboy boots. I plan on going to roundup and look forward to meeting some of you.

Hello everyone,

My name is Mark Berberich, and I hail from Saginaw, Michigan. I've been working with leather since 2002, making wallets, belts, purses/handbags, and soon plan to make a nice hat. My Dad bought me a pair of cowboy boots when I was in about 3rd or 4th grade, although they were quite a bit too big for my feet - we ordered size five in ladies but the company sent them in a man's size five - we didn't understand they didn't make them in women's sizes, LOL. Still, I wore those boots proudly (with two pairs of socks and added padding) for a couple of years until I wore them out completely, and my parents literally had to take them from me. I cried and promised myself that I would have another pair. I bought cowboy boots almost exclusively after graduating from high school for several years. Since my right foot stopped growing before my left did (a whole size difference, and on the narrow side) I've always dreamed of having a pair of custom made cowboy boots but that has always proven to be cost prohibitive. Well, I've seen other people making boots and thought to myself, "If someone else can do it, then I can learn how." Well, I found this forum and decided it is about high time I make good on that claim. Well, I look forward to a good educational experience here, as well as the opportunity to develop more friends and, who knows, maybe even get to meet at a round up or something where we can enjoy a cool glass of lemonade and refreshing conversation.

Hi everyone. Gary Denton here. I'm new to the boot repair business so I may be asking grade school questions. I guess I was succesfull in repairing my own boot heels ( never liked the job that shoe repair shops provided) so when my buddies found out that I could do it, I started doing their's as well. I hope to glean enough information to get confident in re-soleing someday. Thanks in advance for your support. This is a great forum.

Thank you all for your welcome notes. I'm located in Tampa Florida. I've tried shoe/boot repair shops in 4 counties and most don't think communication is an important part of their customer relationship. I ask them if/can they do something on my boots the way I would like it and they respond by doing it however they see fit, usually messing up the heel. I found a great shop in Citrus County and he closed with the bad economy. Decided to do it myself and now my cowboy bootin friends are asking for 'heel' favors. I'll never be a craftman or even very good at repairs, but if I could replace soles and heels I'd be thrilled. Thanks in advance for helping. Gary

Hello All,
My name is Steve Anderson and I own Born Again Boots, a boot repair shop in Marble Falls, TX. I've done personal repairs for about 35 years but mechanical engineering and contracting has been my mainstay until recently. I took advantage of the economic slowdown to make a change, and It's hard to do that in boom times. No longer a slave to the schedule or the employees, I enjoy making a pair of boots better than new. I'll get into making boots some day, but for now fixin' em is challenging enough.

I have been taken aback by the friendliness and willingness to help in this community. I have stopped in at Lisa's shop, Ray Dorwart's, Chad Little's and Wayne Chism's. The willingness to stop and help is almost embarrassing since I'm paranoid about taking time from someones busy schedule. Enjoyed this years roundup immensely and look forward to next year when at least I'll know what 12 iron sole is.

I look forward to meeting more of you,
Merry Christmas and Happy 2012 to all.

ONe of the first few times I saw Elaine, she also had a brand new puppy with her. She is a lady with grit. She had a great teacher and she is going to be a fine boot maker. Already good at the design work, makes a pretty boot, just needs a few more machines to work like they are supposed to. She is going to be a force in the boot making field, especially when her finisher works like it is supposed to. Good luck Siss.

Carrlyn I went and spent a few months with Mike Spikes at Henrietta, Tx last spring. He did a wonderful job teaching me, I didnt feel lost at all when i came home and went to work in my own shop. I had, and still have, plenty of questions but with the notes i took and a few phone calls I've been able to work through most problems. Except for my machines as Bruce mentioned! I'm ready to swing a sledge hammer at a few of them. I had no idea that working on my machines was going to be as big a part of this as actually making the boots!

I completed my first pair of cowboy boot last weekend. I have no equipment so they were cut and sewn by hand. They were maid for my wife and she loves them. I know I have a lot to learn about cowboy boots and am eager to do so. I will try and post a picture this afternoon when I get home from work.

Hello-

My name is Wes Shugart and I just returned from a 2 weeker with Deana McGuffin (who totally rocks!) I would like to say I am in awe of some of the bootmakers on here. To combine a craft with artistry and produce a functional piece of art is inspiring.

I have a side shop where I make belts, cuffs, and guitar straps for the locals in Nashville, TN. Now I am ready to make boots. So, I am ready to be a sponge... soak up all your knowledge, and eventually give back and pay it forward 2 fold.

Thanky Kindly

Wes

I am a new member. Hello to all boot makers and others on the Forum. Some of you may know a little about me. I've been doing leather work since 1960. Had always wanted to also learn about boot making. In 2005 I decided to learn somehow. Got ahold of a book on Ted Truloves' methods. Purchased some used equip., boot leather and started practicing. In 2006 I was lucky enough to win a boot makers contest at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo. with my third pair of boots, in the novice class. The main award was two weeks intense training with Carl Chappell. That gave me a great start. I have also met, gotten help and advice from several good boot makers out there. THANK YOU. So I've been at it about 6yrs. in my spare time as I still hold down a day job at the present time. Glad to be a member of the Forum and boot makers trade. See you or chat with you maybe down the trail. Keith

Welcome Dereck. Look through some of the old posts on here about tools and you'll get some basic ideas on some of the stuff you may need. That's kind of how I did it. Ebay has worked for me too. If you need lasts, I've got some for cheap, but they're for shoes, not cowboy boots.

Keith, You sound like less of a beginner than most beginners. Please share some pictures of your work when you can.

Welcome to you both.

Hello all how is everyone? My name is Zach Darrah and I'm currently taking the steps to start making my own boots. I'm doing research on machinery, supplies, where to learn, etc. I've spoken to a number of boot makers for advice and have had some great conversations. I started a website called http://www.CustomBootMakers.org with the intention of giving boot makers across the country a resource and opportunity to market themselves and show off. This week, I'm going to start profiling boot makers from all walks of life. If you'd like me to put you on the site with links, pictures, etc. about you and your boots or have any suggestions please email me at custombootmakers@yahoo.com The site is for all of us! 8-) I'm really glad to be a part of this community and I look forward to talking/meeting/learing with everyone I can. Take care.

Nick,
You'll learn a lot here about boots, and you're already a step ahead if you're familiar with leather.

Check out the forum and find a good spot to post some of your work... I'd like to see it.

Welcome to the forum.

Greetings from the flatlands! My name is Athan Chilton and I'm writing from the great big town of Philo, IL, where the legend on the water tower reads "Center of the Universe". If there are any other aspiring bootmakers in this state, I sure would like to hear from them. I've had some basic shoemaking training with Alan Zerobnick (ShoeSchool) and Marcell Mrsan (Koronya of Hungary) but have come to realize my real love is boots...cowboy boots. I got to spend 3 weeks studying with DW Frommer II in Oregon last fall and though it was the hardest thing I've probably ever done in my 63 years, I fell in love with bootmaking and there's no turning back. I am still collecting equipment and tools (and letting go of some that are not serving my purpose) and, having made 1 pair of pull-on style western boots with DW, and one pair of Packer style (lace-ups) on my own, now I am partway through my first "try-this-at-home" pair of pull-ons. I'm thrilled to have found this forum and ask forgiveness in advance for asking too many questions!my first attempt at lace-up western style boots

Athan,

Welcome to the board. Good effort on the Packers. Stay at it. Each operation will get easier and easier with good practice.
One of my greatest pleasures from this board is have a record of my own growth as a boot maker over the years.
I encourage to you do the same.
There's a very helpful group here for committed makers.
Best of Wishes for a new avocation.

Hi Kevin, I have used cowboy boot lasts with about 1 and 5/8 in heels, USED. Don't know how many several boxes and barrels, not paired that would take a lot of time. Also, have wooden shoe lasts various styles. $10/pair. Bill Nordan 251-979-3371 c or 251-947-7657

Hello everybody,
My name is Sara Mathews and I grew up working for my father in the Cordwainer Shop in Deerfield, NH. I'm a third generation shoemaker with my kids in training to be the fourth generation. I lost my business last year due to illness. I am currently seeking machinery and lasts in order to get back in to the trade. This picture is an example of the work I used to do at the Cordwainer Shop that I soon hope to replicate.

Hi everyone. I'm Laura from Connecticut. I used to live in Texas where I became interested in cowboy boots. I thought I wrote a profile before but wasn't sure if it had gone through. I have learned so much from the forum, YouTube videos and my classes in NYC but always learn something new. ( this shoe learning is never-ending!) I will put some pics up of my stuff when I figure out how. Best to everyone Laura Stucky
