Thank you Paul, and I will check out your blog. I don’t remember a Western Boot Revival in San Mateo Ca in the 90’s. I’m sure if I known about it I was there, I was actually born in San Mateo California. Thank you again for the information I just love that two piece style. I’m not on facebook so I will just try this design by doing it until I get it right. I got your number and here is mine 925-449-6823 John.

John, I do the backs the same way that Paul described it done. I did the backs as one piece on several triad boots I made. I wasn't sure when you asked how it was supposed to be done. I just figured that would work and I did it that way...TR |

Confirmation Tex. Thank you. I don't imagine there's another way really. I suppose the trick is keeping in mind where the (I like to call them) 'controls' are, like your throat line etc. I might additionaly, that I was shown on the 2pc. to work from a center line on both the flesh side of the back panel as well as the grain side. I also outline the pattern onto that flesh side, which helps with allignment. I don't know how you could have missed me in San Mateo. My 1st shop, In and Out Shoe Repair was a crazy-busy, while-you-wait shop inside Petrini's grocery store on 42nd Ave. at El Camino Real. I was there from about '85 to '92. Then I moved onto 41st Avenue across from San Mateo Inn, until about 1995, when I flew splat! into the ashes of Phoenix, AZ. Only to arise like the ledgedary Phoenix Bird, taking flight and landing here in Prescott. (Please excuse my BS. Love it here!) Let's talk on the phone some time, Paul |

Thanks Daniel, I've heard people say many times how much they like rough outs. I didn't think it would hurt anything to show it. Besides it feels appropriate for the Arizona image. Thanks again, Paul |

Hey Paul, yeah there's something about roughouts alright, reminds you of sun, sand and desert. Actually the top looks like the sun coming up. Nice work. But tell me you don't have lace cloths over all your work benches... Are you using the boot Paul to show your work or is some one else displaying it? Best, Tom |

I never got a chance to comment on your boots. Very nice. I like the tongue. Rough Outs are one of my favorites. |

Tomo, Thank you. I grabbed the table cloth when it got stained. I'm happy enough with it as a bench drape for shop pictures. This boot will be on display in Phoenix for a Centennial fund raiser next week. Carrlyn, Thank you. You commented on this tongue when I used it on another pair. You have my blessing to use it sometime if you wish. These truely were "rough out". GH French Calf, it just had that "sandy" copper look that seemed to work for this one though it is almost too "fuzzie". Here's a side and back view. Thanks again, Paul

Well there have been a few pair of boots "under the bridge" since the above pair, but not as many as past years. It's been a rough one. I moved the shop back into town, took on a helper, and had a lot of catch up to do. Now the helper has moved on too soon, (so I guess there's a helper position available someday.) and the shop is so big I knock arond in it, but it sure is sweet. Pictures sometime. ANyway, here are a couple of pair of boots I did up for the upcoming 21st Annual Trappings of the American West Show, opening this next Saturday the 12th, and running through Feb.19, 2012 here at Prescott's Phippen Museum. The first pair is #3 in my series of Arizona Flag motif designs: A Black French Calf Full Cut with a graft of tooling leather embellished with the AZ Flag waving on it's pole, and trimmed out in Red Kangaroo. The second pair is Tan Ostrich on Bone Silky Water Buffalo from Garlin Neuman, in a Triad design. The pulls, trim and scroll stitch pattern are done in Wedgewood blue. I also submitted the attached 18" Stove Pipe Plainsman in Brown Beaumont with it's Cathedral stitch pattern. This is the one from last year which was never picked up by the customer.

I also want to get out and see your new shop and meet face to face! Blessings my friend. Oh, I too have been through helpers...probably 4 in the last 2 years.....Even one from the school that just left me high and dry. ???? |

Really nice Paul... All three are terrific. Really love the AZ flag inlay. What happens to a pair that isn't picked up? Are they sell-able, or do they become display? by the way Paul... I really like your wesite with a blog style discussion format. Thanks for taking time to describe some of your processes. I expecially appreciate the one on lasts (The Last Comes First), with the pictures as examples. This is a huge deal to someone like me who's trying to learn. Wishing the best, and also wishing for more pics!!! |

Thank you all for the comments. Gee, that feels so good no wonder Chad shows his stuff so good! Really I do enjoy see each others work and, like Chad, wish we all posted more frequently. Chad, I'm sure good helpers are like hens teeth. I'd love to have a friendship/arrangement like Jim Brainard has had featured recently. It would be like someone to hold my hand through the rough spots. I was pretty doubtful about this character from the start. His enthusiasm for boots in general, (and the 4 month delay in making his deposit), was giving me pause to think it was all "groupy talk". But I called three weeks before they would be done, and he assured me he would pick them up....Never a reply; to several calls spread over several months, emails, or post cards. No tellin' what to think. But I told him in several messages at the end there that they would be for sale. We'll see. The snivelin' part is, I could have used that balance for groceries while down with my hip replacement. It ain't for the weak is it friends? Edie, I'm working myself up to some more, so bear with me. Carrlyn and Gordon, I appreciate the encouraging words. Paul |
