My daughter brought these in for me to show off but she forgot to tell me she had worn them to a horse show. So after cleaning them up I had to photograph them again..She added the rhinestones and I will admit they look pretty good on these Queen Bee Boots...TR

Carrlyn,
Thanks, The rhinestones don't show up but they really sparkle..I think the flash hides them. Yeah, I like the new Kodak EZ 1012. The resizing is simple with VSO resizer. So far I recommend it. Sam's has a great price on them...TR

Daniel, Mark, and Janne,
Thanks guys, the blue came out better than I thought it would. Light colored tops are usually a pain and it is hard to get the right color of stitching. But the Sheridan Roo had good color and came out clean...TR

Chad,
Thanks, the last is a med round toed last that I modified to a small box. I shape all of my toes by hand...

Suzanne,
Thanks,
The roo is Hardtke technico and it is tanned in Italy but it works better than the regular Italian roo. The finish is matte and more grainey....TR

Thanks Daniel,

I forgot to say that those boots have a built in metatarsal support. I hollowed out the last and added a piece to the bottom of the innersole to force a hard metatarsal. I don't know how the guy can stand it but this is his 7th or 8th pair like that. Also the heels are belled out at the bottom. One other customer likes that kind of heel....TR

Larry,
Basically I just put my box toes in like you would any other (square)box toe, except I use celastic. Didn't Randy Merrill show you how to do a box toe? The main difference between it and a round toe is you turn up the insole on the end of the last. Then put it in just as you would a leather one. I don't have time to do a step by step tutorial on it now but when I get time I will do that. It may be a while before I do another box toe though....TR

Tex,

I commonly use the celastic as a sandwitch between the vamp and the vamp liner. This uses the toe formed by the last to give the toe its shape. I have modified the last to get a desired shape.

I was visualizing a leather build-up in addition to the celastic placed over the toe area. ??? Up to this point in time, I have just pulled the vamp leather back over the toe,and smooth out the vamp and relast the front toe area. The next day there is a dried and solid toe box, or box toe. This is a bad time for me to be doing too much experimenting as I have 5 pair in process and like you, I push myself when folks are waiting for their boots.

One of the points of quality that I want to improve on is the shape of the toe. Thank you for addressing the insole turn-up.

Very nice work! I especially like the verigated construction stitching that matches the fancy stitching on the toe flower and upper panels.

Tex,

Thank you for posting that close up of your stitching! The inner corner seems to me to always be a decission to take one more stitch or to turn around. "Decissions, decissions" I am a little humbled after getting that "close up."

I wouldn't mind at all if you left it large for a few months as it is worthwhile to folks like me that need a bit of guidence and an example to follow.

Thankyou,

What could the MWF stand for, Monday, Wednesday, Friday?????

FYI,

Tex's eagle boots tied for first place in the Master's Category at the Roundup. This is the first time a tie ever occurred. Both Tex and Carl Chappell were awarded buckles.

Another pair of Justin's boots won first in the Journeyman Category. Keep up the good work.

We'll continue to discuss the Round Up in the Round Up topic.

Congratulations to both you and Justin for your success (well-deserved) at the Roundup! WOW! Such great design and workmanship. I find it interesting that while your boots and Justin's are so different, you both are very graphic and use strong design elements and colour. Is it your influence on him or do you share a similar innate artistic sensibility? And of course Justin can only benefit by being held to such high technical standards.

Tex,
Is 6 rows typically what you shoot for on your patterns?
I seem to recall our school's superintendent mentioning that back when he was a kid, he's in his late 50s btw, that if you had a pair of cowboy boots that had 4 rows that was considered a 'top shelf' pair of boots.

I can say this, the forum here has made me a lot quicker at being able to recognize a maker's boot. I have no doubt when I see those 6 row patterns that they are indeed a Tex Robin boot.

I like the softy water buffalo --- I used some to make a seamless oxford and it was some of the best leather I've played with thus far in my yearlin' career. I'll have to give GN a call (and thanks for reminding me), because that looks like the same stuff.

Thanks Tex,

I make a lot of one row boots, a few 4 row but most common is 5 row..The 6 row is usually used on exotic boots. In the lean 50s-60s three and four rows was the norm...TR

Tex,
I'd be really curious to see something on what rows and stitch patterns have kind of survived throughout the ages... I bet the catalogs at the National Cowboy museum ... I have an open invite from the curator to go through the boot archives, think I'll do a little homework early next year and report back to the crowd here.

Flawless stitching, Tex. Definitely a standard that a youngin' like me can look up to.

Tex,

I like the black and orange color contrast, it works good. I've never asked for black and orange in my boots, probably because it was the colors of my dreaded high school rivals.

The green and orange stitching stands out great with green tops, I would think that the green tops would "drown" them out but it doesn't.

Don't know what it is about green tops, but I like them. That is a really good looking boot.

wow...Justin made those for his sister!
Gotta say, that's about the coolest thing, ever.
His toes have honestly kind of freaked-me-out a little...(the super squared variety)...I chalked-it-up to me being older, and him making a statement.
These?
WOW! He did a well balanced boot, the heels are WONDERFUL, the radius of the decrease at the arch is really elegant, his finishing on the inlays is nice, and the tulip is a really sweet touch, and I am sure a personalized touch just for his sister.
Wow...she is the luckiest girl in town.
Really, really must make your heart swell, Tex to see your grandchildren being so loving, and gifted. You have SO much to be proud of...though I KNOW you give all glory to God.
Thanks for that picture, it made my day.

Welcome to Bootmaking Steve.

I was born in Willits! My Aunt is still up in Laytonville. She just turned 90!

You've got a great looking pair of boots there.

I like that you found a place for a Lotus flower! A great symbol for life renewed and revitalized. Boot making can be a real challenge sometimes, and symbolic images like that can be of great assistance in the difficult times.
It doesn't look like you need to be encouraged to be yourself. You can be a great addition to our little community.

I hope you continue to make boots and will share the experience of the journey with us.

I'm in Prescott AZ, now. Look me up.

Thanks for posting this Tex.

With Regards,
Paul

Great lookin' boots Steve. It takes an amazing skill set to build boots by hand, I hope Steve continues to pursue this craft; a promising start.

...and Tex, a testament to your teaching (and standing behind Steve with your hammer ready, "Don't skip a stitch..." ;) ) skills. It takes a lot of patience above all else to instruct another on a craft you know by heart.

Cheers,

-Jeff

Here are some TCU Hornfrogs I am going to inlay in a pair for a customer. They are done by Peter Main and I hope he doesn't mind my using his photo here. He is a true artist as you can see the pieces are perfectly identical. I will post the completed boots in a few weeks...TR

Tex, Your toe caps look so good. I never really cared for them unil I was forced to put a set on my blue boots. Now I want to do more of them. Maybe one day I can come down to Abilene and talk you into showing me your technic. Yours are some of the best.

Its by the railroad tracks on Main St. here in Tomball. My Grandpa had a boot repair shop there for 28 yrs. There are a lot of good memories in that building. My grandpa gave me some pretty big shoes to fill.
